“There are three basic rules of travelling:

Travel on the ground. Travel alone when possible. Keep notes."

                                                             - Paul Theroux

Les is an inveterate traveler. His business and personal travels have taken him to over 70 countries on the six inhabited continents, including all states within the United States, most of the countries in Europe, southeast Asia and the Americas. He has traveled up the Amazon River on a cargo boat through Brazil and Peru, across Russia via the Trans Siberian Railway, through China by rail, up the coast of Alaska by ferry, and across the Andes by bus and boat. A sailor, he often skippered his sailboat “Chuckles” across Lake Michigan mooring in small town harbors and swapping “sea stories” with others at lakefront taverns. And, as a hiker he has, among other places, tramped along portions of the Appalachian Trail.

An independent traveler, Les enjoys meeting and chatting with people along the way, appreciating a country’s culture and geography through the eyes of its citizens. He takes time to jot down his impressions as a way to interpret what he sees, learns and photographs. His book, Follow the Sun! A City Planner’s Journey Around the World is built on these observations, as are his blogs about travel in the Ukraine, India, South Africa, the Amazon, and the Andes.
